It’s nice when a brand such as Ben&Jerry’s is up to date with the worlds trends and uses those same trends in making interesting and original products – but it’s not nice when that plan completely backfires. To sum it up – Ben&Jerry’s were captured by the “Lin-sanity” – the fast raising fame of basketball-sensation Jeremy Lin, and made an ice cream dedicated to the basketball player and his success. The ice cream was only sold at their Harvard Square location in honor of Lin who is a Harvard grad himself. Now, the tricky part is – take an ice cream, make it out of frozen yogurt, vanilla, lychee-honey swirls and “crumbled fortune cookies” and call it “Lin-sanity” and bam! You get people accusing you of racism. And why is that? The fortune cookie stereotype, of course.

Now I don’t know about you, but I think that people should lighten up. The product was an awesome attempt at honoring a young and successful basketball player. And he’s Asian for Pete’s sake! What did you expect?

The company has, of course, apologized:

“On behalf of Ben & Jerry’s Boston Scoop Shops we offer a heartfelt apology if anyone was offended by our handmade Linsanity flavor that we offered at our Harvard Square location… Our intention was to create a flavor to honor Jeremy Lin’s accomplishments and his meteoric rise in the NBA, and recognize that he was a local Harvard graduate.”

…and replaced the fortune cookies with waffle cookies. The promotion is continuing through Harvard’s basketball season though, and it also features a cute “in-store basketball hoop” promotion where customers can try to win a $1 discount.
