According to Mashable, YouTube started updating its logo on its Facebook, Twitter and Google+ pages last Friday, as well as in its last week’s mobile app update, whereas the new logo now stands as the app’s icon.

This is one of YouTube’s first major logo changes, since the logo basically stayed the same from its beginning, only to have a few retouches. The guys at Mashable reached out to YouTube wondering will they be ditching the old logo and replacing it with the new, flat one: “Our main logo is a core part of YouTube and is not going away,” a rep told them in a statement. “We are increasingly using our play button for apps and icons.” YouTube replied.

Although the play button logo is not the official new logo, the guys at Brand New think that if it was, it would be a much better solution: “They are establishing their big play button inside its own recognizable shape as the main identifier for YouTube, which is a perfect strategy since every time you watch a YouTube video it’s the first thing you see. It’s similar to Twitter going with the blue bird.”

What do you think of the new logo then? The modern, simplified and – now trending – flat design isn’t surprising considering that the brand is owned by Google, and therefore sticking to the guidelines of Google’s visual assets. But is it an improvement, or is there nothing better then the original thing? Tell us your thoughts.
